Chiefs look to continue two-game win streak
Their last meeting with the Chargers was January 2, 2005 and the Chiefs have been waiting for their chance to avenge that 24-17 loss ever since.
Both teams have a chance to improve their showing within the AFC West division. San Diego is 3-4 (1-1 in the division), while the Chiefs sit at 4-2 (1-1 in the division).
San Diego opened as a 6-point home favorite in this contest. Oddsmakers set the opening total at a high 50 points.
Last time out, the Chiefs defeated Miami 30-20 as 1-point underdogs. That contest went over the closing total.
The Chargers lost to Philadelphia 20-17 as 4-point underdogs. That contest went under the closing total.
Expect the league's #2 offense to get points on the board and generate trouble for the Chiefs defense. Averaging 27.6 points per game, the Chargers can run up the score if they get on a roll.

Vikings, Panthers set for battle
Fresh off a victory last game over Detroit, Carolina can stay on a roll Sunday by handling the Minnesota Vikings.
Oddsmakers like the Panthers' chances in this one, as they've been opened as 8-point home favorites. The total opened at 44.5 points.
Last time out, at Metrodome against Green Bay, the Vikings as underdogs defeated Green Bay 23-20. The game was a Minnesota cover and an under play.
The Panthers come off a 21-20 win against Detroit, a game where they were 3-point favorites. The game went over the closing total of 40.5.
It's not Christmas yet, but when it comes to gift giving, Minnesota is charitable with the turnovers. The Vikings have turned it over 3.0 times per game this year, rated 31st in the league.

Eagles/Broncos clash set for Sunday
Coming off a disappointing 24-23 loss last time out, Denver has a chance to get back on the winning track Sunday at home.
Denver brings a 5-2 overall mark (2-0 in the division) into this game versus a Philadelphia team carrying a 4-2 record.
Oddsmakers opened the Broncos as 3.5-point favorites versus the Eagles, with the opening total sitting at 43 points.
Last time out, at Lincoln Financial Field against San Diego, the Eagles as favorites defeated San Diego 20-17. The game was a San Diego cover and an under play.
Meanwhile, at Giants Stadium, the Broncos were losing to New York 24-23. The game was a New York cover and an over play.
Expect the Broncos to pound the ball along the ground, as they come in with the league's #2 rushing attack, averaging 158.7 yards per contest.

With over 100 pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup, this is a good time to identify the logical contenders and some live long shots to think about before they draw the races on Wednesday. Post positions will be important in the sprint especially but the weather factor is of the utmost. Keep one eye to the sky before locking in on any wager.
In order of how the events will be run, the Juvenile Fillies kicks things off and you have to remember these are just babies. Home court favorites Adieu and Folklore have lived to fight another day and Adieu, who has beaten Folklore in 2 of 3 this year, was flattered when Folklore freaked in the Matron. Wild Fit and Original Sin will be betting numbers and must be considered but would take a long look at Diamond Omi. Figure players will be off of her from her low numbers but Bob Baffert has been high on her since Day One.
Big prices have been the order of the day for the Juvenile in the last half dozen years and you have 2 unbeaten horses banging away this season. First Samurai (4 for 4) and Sorcerer’s Stone (3 for 3) will take some serious money and western hope Stevie Wonderboy figures to love the race shape as he is a stone-cold closer. Samurai was visually impressive taking the Champagne in that he was schooled during the race and he will be very tough. Long shots abound though and they include foreigners Ivan Denisovich, Leo and Set Alight. Ivan is out of a BC Distaff champ and kin to BC Mile champ War Chant. Leo is modestly bred but trained by super horseman John Gosden while Set Alight was troubled in July loss but will be seeking the hat trick.
The Filly and Mare Turf is wide open. Ouija Board will try to defend her title, Angara moves up if the going is off, Karen’s Caper deserves long shot consideration and Mona Lisa could make backers smile at a huge number. Leaning toward Megahertz, who lost in Chicago in a tough beat despite hating the going and will be flying late. Don’t dismiss Wend. Pushed wide after slow start in last, she can be closer this time and looms the value play.
You can’t make a mistake in the Sprint or it will be over. Some may think the race begins and ends with unbeaten Lost in the Fog, who is looking for his 11th straight win, but wise people would think again. He is hooking more speed than he has ever seen in his life and although the connections are classy, this guy could be set up for a downfall. Long shots to consider are Wildcat Heir, who figures to be in a perfect stalking position, and Silver Train, whose only bad Belmont race came at the wrong distance.
Defending Mile champ Singletary is coming to race right but Leroidesanimaux is the American to beat. For value you should look to the runners that have run well on this course and to all the Euros, who should love the going if there is some give in the ground. Valixier and Whipper are Euros that must be watched. Valixier’s teacher Andre Fabre has 3 BC wins and 11 slices with 36 starters. Bob Collet, who won this race nearly 2 decades ago with Last Tycoon, handles Whipper.
Ashado heads the Distaff as defending champ but only one of 6 prior champs repeated and she is no cinch. Stellar Jayne loves this layout and if the track is off, Society Selection’s stock raises big time. Pleasant Home, trained by Shug McGaughey, who ran 1-2 in this race in 1995, could upset the apple cart. She has tactical speed and is peaking now.
To be or not to be will be Shakespear’s fate in the BC Turf. Five for 5 with 2 local wins; the concern about this guy is was the lemon squeezed dry? He was all out in last and now must face the best in the world. Can’t fault those that box Euros like Ace, Alkaased, Bago and Shirocco in the superfecta. If you looking for a red, white and blue collar runner try Fourty Niners Son. He caught a lone speed 2 back, wins the Million in 2 more jumps, comes off game win and is in world class hands of Neil Drysdale.
Average win price of the Classic is over $33 but that is skewed by fact Arcangues paid nearly $270. There is little to separate top three in Saint Liam, Rock Hard Ten and Borrego. Rock had a bruise after recent work and will show up late, never a good thing with this kind of money on the line. Borrego has never been better and the Saint is coming off a handy win. One race jumps off the canvas regarding Liam and that’s the race to Ghostzapper last year. That effort stamps him the one to beat. Interesting long shot award goes to Choctaw Nation, who needs the right trip but could be the one if race falls apart. Respect Starcraft. Starcraft’s trainer Luca Cumani has had a number of BC winners, and they are intent on shocking the world here.

The Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships provides an excruciating test of handicapping for even the best horseplayers in the business, but for those who can find the value plays and pick the winners it can be a glorious day of riches. And there is some luck involved - after all it is horseracing!
The late Pick 4 last year paid $23,395.60 and you could have bought the winning ticket for only $64 by wheeling two logical favorites with the fields in the other two races. With that in mind, the following Breeder’s Cup picks and angles are designed to give you some ideas of your own for this stellar day of racing, which takes place at Belmont Park, Elmont, New York on Saturday, October 29, 2005.
Note: Picks and Angles are based on a fast track

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks and Angles
Adieu (3-1) and Folklore (7/2) will vie for favorite status in the Juvenile but we’ll prefer Adieu based on the fact that she has beaten Folklore in two of their three meetings. Folklore romped in her prep, the Grade 1 Matron, and recorded the highest Beyer speed figure in the field at 99, but we’re wondering who she beat up on in that race. Keep in mind however, that Folklore’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, has won this race four times.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Original Spin (6-1), an improving sort who had a powerful work on October 21 under new rider Jerry Bailey; Along The Sea (20-1), another improving sort who gets blinkers on; Diamond Omi, winner of the Grade 1 Oak Leaf that has produced the last two winners of this race; Wild Fit (6-1), who looked great winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and who could rebound to best form here; Sensation (10-1), who owns the second best Beyer Figure in the race at 98; and Ex Caelis (20-1), purely on the trainer angle of Lukas.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Picks and Angles
First Samurai (8/5) will be favored based on his perfect 4-for-4 record and his professional romping win in Belmont’s Grade 1 Champagne in his last. He will be close throughout and they will have to outgame him to win this.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Henny Hughes (5-1), who has been defeated twice in a row by the favorite but who also possesses lightning speed; Stevie Wonderboy (8-1), who has been working like a monster and who could be sitting on a huge race; Brother Derek (20-1), who has a wake up pace pattern; Sorcerer’s Stone (10-1), who comes off a big win in the Grade 3 Arlington Washington Futurity; Private Vow (8-1), a strong winner of the Grade 1 Belmont Futurity; and Set Alight (30-1), a classy French shipper with the speed to stay close.
Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Picks and Angles
Defending champ Ouija Board (5/2) will be favored to win this race again this year and she is definitely the horse to beat. But while she does outclass the field she is coming into this race with only a single prep over average horses - and she has had to overcome numerous minor injuries this year.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Favourable Terms (20-1), a European shipper coming off a poor performance but with Grade 1 back class; Film Maker (15-1), second in this race last year and now getting the services of North America’s top jock in Patrick Valenzuela; Mona Lisa (15-1), a European shipper who was a good second in the classy Grade 1 Prix de l’Opera in France in her last; Wonder Again (6-1), who came with a big late kick in her last, the Grade 1 Flower Bowl, to finish second and defeat Film Maker in the process; and Flip Flop (15-1), whose trainer says she will improve off her loss to Megahertz (5-1) in the her last, the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon.
Breeders' Cup Sprint Picks and Angles
Lost in the Fog (1-1) will be the shortest priced favorite of the day and he could be any kind. He’s a perfect 10-for-10 lifetime and he runs fast early and runs fast late. The only knock against him is the fact that he hasn’t beaten this level of competition before.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Lion Tamer (8-1), who finished with a rush in his prep, the Grade 1 Vosburgh; Taste of Paradise (12-1), the powerful rallying winner of the Vosburgh in his first start at Belmont Park; Wildcat Heir (15-1) a speedy Grade 1 winner who can run a big race at any time; Pomeroy (12-1), an in-and-outer who has run fast enough in his career to beat Lost in the Fog in the past; Lifestyle (30-1), based on the fact he had an operation after his last race to correct a breathing problem; Silver Train (15-1), an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap at Belmont in his last who appears to have improved for new trainer Richard Dutrow; Battle Won (15-1), on the Turf to Dirt angle; Gygistar (30-1), who is 5-for-8 at Belmont in good races; and Attila’s Storm (50-1), if Patrick Valenzuela takes the mount.

Breeders' Cup Mile Picks and Angles
Leroidesanimaux (5-2) will be favored for the Mile based on his perfect 8-for-8 record including a smashing win in the Grade 1 Atto Mile at Woodbine in his last. The only knock against him in this race is the fact that he has wired his fields in his last three starts - nice knock to have, but this race is usually won by stalkers who come flying late. This horse probably doesn’t need the lead to win, but it appears he wants to be close.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Artie Schiller (6-1), narrowly beaten in his prep for this by a horse he didn’t see sneaking up the rail - and he has one of the world’s best young trainers at the helm in Jimmy Jerkens; Singletary (8-1), the winner of this race last year who comes into the race with a win over lesser rivals; FunFair (12-1), a former European who is undefeated in North America in three starts including his sneaky rail win over Artie Schiller in the Grade 2 Kelso - but he seems to find a way to win; Host (20-1), who won in his first try against Grade 1 company in his last despite getting a poor start; Three Valleys (20-1), who didn’t like the surface in his last; Laura’s Lucky Boy (30-1) who’s trainer says he is peaking for this race; and Gorella (30-1), a French 3-year-old filly who finished second to the mighty Starcraft two starts ago in France but who defeated fellow Mile pre-entrants Valixir (6-1) and Whipper (20-1) in the process.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Picks and Angles
Defending champ Ashado (5/2) will be favored to repeat in the Distaff this year but she may have a tougher time of it. She did win her prep, the Grade 1 Beldame, and she does have the speed style required, but the horse she beat in her last had some minor trouble in that race and could be ready to pounce.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Happy Ticket (5-1), narrowly beaten by Ashado in her last after some minor traffic trouble and who will be making her third start off a layoff; Society Selection (8-1), who has Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens in her corner but who need a sizzling pace to set the race up for her; 3-year-old Sweet Symphony (10-1), who top jockey Jerry Bailey chose to ride over fellow contender Stellar Jayne (4-1); Healthy Addiction (10-1), off a front running score in the Grade 2 Lady’s Secret and who’s running style suits this race; and Nothing But Fun (30-1), who won the Grade 2 Cotillion in her last, the same race Ashado prepped in to win this race last year.
Breeders' Cup Turf Picks and Angles
This race is wide open and the Turf favorites will be lukewarm at best with European Azamour (4-1) and USA-based Shakespeare (5-1) sharing those honors. Azamour owns the second best mile-and-a-half performance in the world this year with his victory in the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes two starts ago. Shakespeare comes into the race off a game win over English Channel (10-1) in Belmont’s Grade 1 Turf Classic.
If you really like the favorites they should offer decent value, but those looking for some longshots will want to consider in no particular order: Alkaased (15-1), a European mile and a half specialist; Better Talk Now (8-1), the defending champ who loves to come up with big late moves to beat these kind; Bago (8-1), third in the classy Grade 1 Arc de Triomphe in his prep; Fourty Niners Son (12-1), an honest improving horse whose last race may be better than it looks - but who has never tried this distance; Motivator (6-1), who won the Group 1 Epsom Derby by five lengths earlier this year; and Shirocco (15-1), a fresh horse who could improve on his fourth place finish in the Arc de Triomphe.
Breeders' Cup Classic Picks and Angles
Three horses will vie for favorite status in the Classic and all have a shot to win. Saint Liam (3-1) comes into the race off a cruising win in Belmont’s Grade 1 Woodward, but has never won at the distance. Rock Hard Ten (7/2), has been working like a monster and comes into this race fresh off a win in the Grade 2 Goodwood to try and add to his four-race winning streak; Borrego (4-1), looked like he was from another planet beating up on his rivals in Belmont’s Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup while not being asked through the stretch.
If you really like the favorites they should offer decent value, but those looking for some longshots will want to consider in no particular order:
Starcraft (10-1), a classy European shipper with speed who has two Grade 1 wins in a row and who may get the services of Pat Valenzuela - but, he has never run on the dirt; Oratorio (12-1), thought by many to be Europe’s best older horse and coming into this race off a dull performance in which he was said not to have liked the drying out surface; Flower Alley (12-1), a 3-year-old who has run a big number at the distance but who didn’t perform well in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in his first try against older horses; and Perfect Drift (12-1), who comes into this race off an excusable performance in the sloppy Hawthorne Gold Cup but who could conceivably rally to win if the pace is fast and completely collapses.
Whew! That’s a lot to think about before Saturday. Hope it helps.
Good luck with your Breeder’s Cup Picks!

Basketball Handicapping
NBA West Wagering PreviewApparently, winning the NBA championship just isn't enough. The San Antonio Spurs want to take the entire league and make it their personal plaything. It's not going to be much fun for the other teams in the Western Conference - but it'll be a blast for the rest of us to watch. The reigning champions must have felt their playoff series against the Seattle SuperSonics and the Detroit Pistons were a little too close for comfort. They added to their talent pool by signing Michael Finley, Argentinean big-man Fabricio Oberto and pesky Nick Van Exel. Now the Spurs have depth at every position to go along with a bevy of All-Star starters. Can the rest of the West hope to compete? The Phoenix Suns had the best regular season in the league last year, then decided a defensive upgrade (Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and Brian Grant) would be the best way to win a title. But with Amare Stoudamire out for around four months after microfracture surgery on his left knee, Phoenix will probably have to tread water until his return. That leaves the Dallas Mavericks as the only other established challenger to the conference title. They won 58 games last year and have only one major change: Doug Christie is replacing Finley at shooting guard. That may turn out to be a wash. Both players are in decline and were victims of the amnesty clause in the new collective bargaining agreement. Three promising teams are on the verge of joining the Western elite; or, in the case of the Sacramento Kings, rejoining. The Kings finally bit the bullet and divested themselves of Chris Webber, and in the process have been reborn. They also did what the New Jersey Nets failed to do and acquired Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who finally gets to play power forward again in Webber's old spot. The Houston Rockets are also refitted, adding point guard Rafer Alston and big man Stromile Swift. Their presence suggests the Rockets have truly become Tracy McGrady's team - how they'll fit around Yao Ming, on the other hand, remains to be seen. And the Denver Nuggets are ready to rock and run in their first full year under coach George Karl. All they have to do is figure out a system that will allow them to play all three of their point guards at once, after obtaining Earl Watson to go with Andre Miller and Earl Boykins. Can the SuperSonics duplicate last year's surprising season? They've already pulled off the improbable by signing most of their free agents, although the loss of Antonio Daniels could hurt. The Minnesota Timberwolves are also difficult to pin down. They've jettisoned malcontents Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. Will it be a case of addition by subtraction? Kevin Garnett won the MVP award two years ago with Cassell and Sprewell by his side. Doing the same with Marko Jaric and Rashad McCants would be truly valuable. The West being as deep as ever, there are several teams who could be poised to sneak into the playoffs. The Golden State Warriors were a changed team after the arrival of Baron Davis, and more of the same is in store if (and this is a big if) Davis can stay healthy. The Utah Jazz are looking forward to an injury-free season from Andrei Kirilenko and Matt Harpring. The Portland Trail Blazers have "weeded" out many of their police-blotter regulars, the Memphis Grizzlies have the tools to post their third winning season in a row, and even the Los Angeles Clippers have to be pleased with their collection of talent. Then there's the other team in L.A. The first year of the post-Shaquille O'Neal Era didn't go too well for the Lakers, thanks to injuries, infighting and coaching changes. Phil Jackson is back to take care of the last two issues. Whether he can squeeze a trip to the postseason out of Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and a thin supporting cast remains to be seen. But at least they're not the New Orleans Hornets. They're facing a season full of "home" games in Oklahoma City after Hurricane Katrina left them without a viable venue in the Big Easy. Not even promising rookie guards Chris Paul and Arvydas Macijauskas can save this team from the Western basement. If only they had stayed in Charlotte, and in the Eastern Conference. Look for our preview of the NBA East next Tuesday, November 1st, opening day of the 2005-06 regular season.

The Breeders' Cup pre-entries for 2005 were taken on Oct. 17, 2005 and it looks like an excellent mix of favorites and intriguing longshots!
Some great wagering opportunities are sure to reveal themselves by the time the official entries are drawn later this week.
Adieu has been made the 3-1 choice to beat Folklore in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies but her numbers are soft so we'll likely be looking for another one of the ladies to improve at the right time and price.

First Samurai is listed at 8/5 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and he could be something special, but we'll have to watch his workouts this week to make sure he's on top of his game.
There's no question that last year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Ouija Board, listed at 5/2, is the class of that race again this year, but she may not be coming into this year's running quite as good after overcoming a splint and a quarter crack earlier this season. Another one who needs to be watched closely.
The Breeders' Cup Sprint is headed by undefeated monster Lost In The Fog, who at even money is the shortest priced horse on the card. His perfect 10-for-10 record is on the line in this race and he has NEVER experienced the kind of class pressure he'll face on Breeders' Cup Day.
Leroidesanimaux (Brz), the favorite in the Breeders' Cup Mile at 5/2, hasn't lost since his first start in the USA way back on January 7, 2004. The Brazilian-bred is 8-for-8 since then and comes into this race off five solid Graded Stakes wins in a row, the last being a romp in Woodbine's Grade 1 Atto Mile.
The Breeders' Cup Distaff could be the most wide open race on the card despite the presence of 5/2 defending champ Ashado, who comes into the race off a game win in the Grade 1 Beldame over fellow Distaff entrant Happy Ticket.
The 1 1/2 mile Breeders' Cup Turf Turf is another wide open affair with European star Azamour listed at 4-1 over the Billy Mott trained Shakespeare and Arc de Triomphe third place finisher Bago at 8-1. Pick'em!
And finally we get to the Breeders' Cup Classic, which should be the best race of the day. At least three horses are coming off romping wins over strong competition, making this race incredibly tough to pick. Saint Liam has been made the 3-1 choice over Rock Hard Ten (7/2) and Borrego (4-1), who was smashing in his recent Jockey Club Gold Cup win over the track.
While the favorites look logical, they also look beatable - which means big payoffs in the multi-race best like the Pick 4, Ultra Pick 6, and rolling Pick 3s - if - you can figure who will fire and who won't. I say - let the longshots roll!

Breeders Cup wagering opportunities abound in the 22nd running of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships this year at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York on Saturday, Oct 29.
This will the fourth time the Breeder's Cup has been held at Belmont Park, but it should be richer than usual for bettors, based on an aggressive Breeders' Cup wagering key.
Ten races will be offered on horse racing's biggest day, the betting pools will be massive and the wagering menu is better than ever with multi-race wagers that include two Daily Doubles, eight Pick 3s, two Pick 4s and of course, the one everybody wants to win - the Breeders’ Cup Ultra Pick 6.

Multi-race wagers will be complemented by traditional Win, Place, and Show wagering along with Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta and Head2Head wagering on every race.
Rolling Pick 3 wagering starts on the first race of the day, the $250,000 Emirates Airline Sport Page Handicap, and continues through to Race 8, the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Pick 4 wagering will be offered both the early and late on this Breeders' Cup wagering key, with the first Pick 4 beginning in the third race, the Alberto VO5 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and running through to Race 6, the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Wagering on the second Breeders Cup Pick 4 begins in Race 7, the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile and extends through to Race 10, the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge.
Breeders' Cup wagering on this year's Ultra Pick 6 begins in Race 5, the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and also extends through to Race 10, the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Regardless of your pocket book or betting style, there’s something for everyone on this year’s Breeders Cup wagering menu. I’ll take the profit with a side order of action smothered in emotion.
