With over 100 pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup, this is a good time to identify the logical contenders and some live long shots to think about before they draw the races on Wednesday. Post positions will be important in the sprint especially but the weather factor is of the utmost. Keep one eye to the sky before locking in on any wager.
In order of how the events will be run, the Juvenile Fillies kicks things off and you have to remember these are just babies. Home court favorites Adieu and Folklore have lived to fight another day and Adieu, who has beaten Folklore in 2 of 3 this year, was flattered when Folklore freaked in the Matron. Wild Fit and Original Sin will be betting numbers and must be considered but would take a long look at Diamond Omi. Figure players will be off of her from her low numbers but Bob Baffert has been high on her since Day One.
Big prices have been the order of the day for the Juvenile in the last half dozen years and you have 2 unbeaten horses banging away this season. First Samurai (4 for 4) and Sorcerer’s Stone (3 for 3) will take some serious money and western hope Stevie Wonderboy figures to love the race shape as he is a stone-cold closer. Samurai was visually impressive taking the Champagne in that he was schooled during the race and he will be very tough. Long shots abound though and they include foreigners Ivan Denisovich, Leo and Set Alight. Ivan is out of a BC Distaff champ and kin to BC Mile champ War Chant. Leo is modestly bred but trained by super horseman John Gosden while Set Alight was troubled in July loss but will be seeking the hat trick.
The Filly and Mare Turf is wide open. Ouija Board will try to defend her title, Angara moves up if the going is off, Karen’s Caper deserves long shot consideration and Mona Lisa could make backers smile at a huge number. Leaning toward Megahertz, who lost in Chicago in a tough beat despite hating the going and will be flying late. Don’t dismiss Wend. Pushed wide after slow start in last, she can be closer this time and looms the value play.
You can’t make a mistake in the Sprint or it will be over. Some may think the race begins and ends with unbeaten Lost in the Fog, who is looking for his 11th straight win, but wise people would think again. He is hooking more speed than he has ever seen in his life and although the connections are classy, this guy could be set up for a downfall. Long shots to consider are Wildcat Heir, who figures to be in a perfect stalking position, and Silver Train, whose only bad Belmont race came at the wrong distance.
Defending Mile champ Singletary is coming to race right but Leroidesanimaux is the American to beat. For value you should look to the runners that have run well on this course and to all the Euros, who should love the going if there is some give in the ground. Valixier and Whipper are Euros that must be watched. Valixier’s teacher Andre Fabre has 3 BC wins and 11 slices with 36 starters. Bob Collet, who won this race nearly 2 decades ago with Last Tycoon, handles Whipper.
Ashado heads the Distaff as defending champ but only one of 6 prior champs repeated and she is no cinch. Stellar Jayne loves this layout and if the track is off, Society Selection’s stock raises big time. Pleasant Home, trained by Shug McGaughey, who ran 1-2 in this race in 1995, could upset the apple cart. She has tactical speed and is peaking now.
To be or not to be will be Shakespear’s fate in the BC Turf. Five for 5 with 2 local wins; the concern about this guy is was the lemon squeezed dry? He was all out in last and now must face the best in the world. Can’t fault those that box Euros like Ace, Alkaased, Bago and Shirocco in the superfecta. If you looking for a red, white and blue collar runner try Fourty Niners Son. He caught a lone speed 2 back, wins the Million in 2 more jumps, comes off game win and is in world class hands of Neil Drysdale.
Average win price of the Classic is over $33 but that is skewed by fact Arcangues paid nearly $270. There is little to separate top three in Saint Liam, Rock Hard Ten and Borrego. Rock had a bruise after recent work and will show up late, never a good thing with this kind of money on the line. Borrego has never been better and the Saint is coming off a handy win. One race jumps off the canvas regarding Liam and that’s the race to Ghostzapper last year. That effort stamps him the one to beat. Interesting long shot award goes to Choctaw Nation, who needs the right trip but could be the one if race falls apart. Respect Starcraft. Starcraft’s trainer Luca Cumani has had a number of BC winners, and they are intent on shocking the world here.
