Sports Betting
The Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships provides an excruciating test of handicapping for even the best horseplayers in the business, but for those who can find the value plays and pick the winners it can be a glorious day of riches. And there is some luck involved - after all it is horseracing!
The late Pick 4 last year paid $23,395.60 and you could have bought the winning ticket for only $64 by wheeling two logical favorites with the fields in the other two races. With that in mind, the following Breeder’s Cup picks and angles are designed to give you some ideas of your own for this stellar day of racing, which takes place at Belmont Park, Elmont, New York on Saturday, October 29, 2005.
Note: Picks and Angles are based on a fast track
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks and Angles
Adieu (3-1) and Folklore (7/2) will vie for favorite status in the Juvenile but we’ll prefer Adieu based on the fact that she has beaten Folklore in two of their three meetings. Folklore romped in her prep, the Grade 1 Matron, and recorded the highest Beyer speed figure in the field at 99, but we’re wondering who she beat up on in that race. Keep in mind however, that Folklore’s trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, has won this race four times.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Original Spin (6-1), an improving sort who had a powerful work on October 21 under new rider Jerry Bailey; Along The Sea (20-1), another improving sort who gets blinkers on; Diamond Omi, winner of the Grade 1 Oak Leaf that has produced the last two winners of this race; Wild Fit (6-1), who looked great winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and who could rebound to best form here; Sensation (10-1), who owns the second best Beyer Figure in the race at 98; and Ex Caelis (20-1), purely on the trainer angle of Lukas.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Picks and Angles
First Samurai (8/5) will be favored based on his perfect 4-for-4 record and his professional romping win in Belmont’s Grade 1 Champagne in his last. He will be close throughout and they will have to outgame him to win this.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Henny Hughes (5-1), who has been defeated twice in a row by the favorite but who also possesses lightning speed; Stevie Wonderboy (8-1), who has been working like a monster and who could be sitting on a huge race; Brother Derek (20-1), who has a wake up pace pattern; Sorcerer’s Stone (10-1), who comes off a big win in the Grade 3 Arlington Washington Futurity; Private Vow (8-1), a strong winner of the Grade 1 Belmont Futurity; and Set Alight (30-1), a classy French shipper with the speed to stay close.
Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Picks and Angles
Defending champ Ouija Board (5/2) will be favored to win this race again this year and she is definitely the horse to beat. But while she does outclass the field she is coming into this race with only a single prep over average horses - and she has had to overcome numerous minor injuries this year.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Favourable Terms (20-1), a European shipper coming off a poor performance but with Grade 1 back class; Film Maker (15-1), second in this race last year and now getting the services of North America’s top jock in Patrick Valenzuela; Mona Lisa (15-1), a European shipper who was a good second in the classy Grade 1 Prix de l’Opera in France in her last; Wonder Again (6-1), who came with a big late kick in her last, the Grade 1 Flower Bowl, to finish second and defeat Film Maker in the process; and Flip Flop (15-1), whose trainer says she will improve off her loss to Megahertz (5-1) in the her last, the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon.
Breeders' Cup Sprint Picks and Angles
Lost in the Fog (1-1) will be the shortest priced favorite of the day and he could be any kind. He’s a perfect 10-for-10 lifetime and he runs fast early and runs fast late. The only knock against him is the fact that he hasn’t beaten this level of competition before.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Lion Tamer (8-1), who finished with a rush in his prep, the Grade 1 Vosburgh; Taste of Paradise (12-1), the powerful rallying winner of the Vosburgh in his first start at Belmont Park; Wildcat Heir (15-1) a speedy Grade 1 winner who can run a big race at any time; Pomeroy (12-1), an in-and-outer who has run fast enough in his career to beat Lost in the Fog in the past; Lifestyle (30-1), based on the fact he had an operation after his last race to correct a breathing problem; Silver Train (15-1), an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap at Belmont in his last who appears to have improved for new trainer Richard Dutrow; Battle Won (15-1), on the Turf to Dirt angle; Gygistar (30-1), who is 5-for-8 at Belmont in good races; and Attila’s Storm (50-1), if Patrick Valenzuela takes the mount.
Breeders' Cup Mile Picks and Angles
Leroidesanimaux (5-2) will be favored for the Mile based on his perfect 8-for-8 record including a smashing win in the Grade 1 Atto Mile at Woodbine in his last. The only knock against him in this race is the fact that he has wired his fields in his last three starts - nice knock to have, but this race is usually won by stalkers who come flying late. This horse probably doesn’t need the lead to win, but it appears he wants to be close.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Artie Schiller (6-1), narrowly beaten in his prep for this by a horse he didn’t see sneaking up the rail - and he has one of the world’s best young trainers at the helm in Jimmy Jerkens; Singletary (8-1), the winner of this race last year who comes into the race with a win over lesser rivals; FunFair (12-1), a former European who is undefeated in North America in three starts including his sneaky rail win over Artie Schiller in the Grade 2 Kelso - but he seems to find a way to win; Host (20-1), who won in his first try against Grade 1 company in his last despite getting a poor start; Three Valleys (20-1), who didn’t like the surface in his last; Laura’s Lucky Boy (30-1) who’s trainer says he is peaking for this race; and Gorella (30-1), a French 3-year-old filly who finished second to the mighty Starcraft two starts ago in France but who defeated fellow Mile pre-entrants Valixir (6-1) and Whipper (20-1) in the process.
Breeders' Cup Distaff Picks and Angles
Defending champ Ashado (5/2) will be favored to repeat in the Distaff this year but she may have a tougher time of it. She did win her prep, the Grade 1 Beldame, and she does have the speed style required, but the horse she beat in her last had some minor trouble in that race and could be ready to pounce.
Those looking for value and betting angles will want to consider in no particular order: Happy Ticket (5-1), narrowly beaten by Ashado in her last after some minor traffic trouble and who will be making her third start off a layoff; Society Selection (8-1), who has Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens in her corner but who need a sizzling pace to set the race up for her; 3-year-old Sweet Symphony (10-1), who top jockey Jerry Bailey chose to ride over fellow contender Stellar Jayne (4-1); Healthy Addiction (10-1), off a front running score in the Grade 2 Lady’s Secret and who’s running style suits this race; and Nothing But Fun (30-1), who won the Grade 2 Cotillion in her last, the same race Ashado prepped in to win this race last year.
Breeders' Cup Turf Picks and Angles
This race is wide open and the Turf favorites will be lukewarm at best with European Azamour (4-1) and USA-based Shakespeare (5-1) sharing those honors. Azamour owns the second best mile-and-a-half performance in the world this year with his victory in the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes two starts ago. Shakespeare comes into the race off a game win over English Channel (10-1) in Belmont’s Grade 1 Turf Classic.
If you really like the favorites they should offer decent value, but those looking for some longshots will want to consider in no particular order: Alkaased (15-1), a European mile and a half specialist; Better Talk Now (8-1), the defending champ who loves to come up with big late moves to beat these kind; Bago (8-1), third in the classy Grade 1 Arc de Triomphe in his prep; Fourty Niners Son (12-1), an honest improving horse whose last race may be better than it looks - but who has never tried this distance; Motivator (6-1), who won the Group 1 Epsom Derby by five lengths earlier this year; and Shirocco (15-1), a fresh horse who could improve on his fourth place finish in the Arc de Triomphe.
Breeders' Cup Classic Picks and Angles
Three horses will vie for favorite status in the Classic and all have a shot to win. Saint Liam (3-1) comes into the race off a cruising win in Belmont’s Grade 1 Woodward, but has never won at the distance. Rock Hard Ten (7/2), has been working like a monster and comes into this race fresh off a win in the Grade 2 Goodwood to try and add to his four-race winning streak; Borrego (4-1), looked like he was from another planet beating up on his rivals in Belmont’s Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup while not being asked through the stretch.
If you really like the favorites they should offer decent value, but those looking for some longshots will want to consider in no particular order:
Starcraft (10-1), a classy European shipper with speed who has two Grade 1 wins in a row and who may get the services of Pat Valenzuela - but, he has never run on the dirt; Oratorio (12-1), thought by many to be Europe’s best older horse and coming into this race off a dull performance in which he was said not to have liked the drying out surface; Flower Alley (12-1), a 3-year-old who has run a big number at the distance but who didn’t perform well in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in his first try against older horses; and Perfect Drift (12-1), who comes into this race off an excusable performance in the sloppy Hawthorne Gold Cup but who could conceivably rally to win if the pace is fast and completely collapses.
Whew! That’s a lot to think about before Saturday. Hope it helps.
Good luck with your Breeder’s Cup Picks!
