Sunday, October 16 B.C. at Montreal, 1:00 pm EDTIt's a good thing the Lions clinched a playoff spot weeks ago because lately they've looked dreadful. However their opponents this week, the Montreal Alouettes, have recently been playing some of their best football of the season. The last time these two teams hooked up back in Week 13, the Lions just scraped by the Als 27-26 when Montreal coach Don Matthews decided to go for a two-point conversion late in the game instead of kicking a game-tying extra point. With the Lions struggling, oddsmakers opened this contest with the Alouettes favored by 3 points. The Lions have dropped three straight games after getting routed by Winnipeg 44-23 last week despite B.C. entering the contest as a 6.5-point favorite. It's a guessing game as to who will start at quarterback this week ,after third-stringer Buck Pierce went down with an injury last week. Defending CFL MVP Casey Printers relieved Pierce but he wasn't very effective and has been in and out of the lineup recently with an injured shoulder. The Lions could really use starting QB Dave Dickenson right now, but it might be better to let the veteran rest up and remain healthy for the playoffs. The Alouettes are riding a three-game winning streak after dropping surging Saskatchewan 38-34 last week. Als' quarterback Anthony Calvillo has really turned it on as the season winds down, completing 22-of-32 passes for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns in last week's win. Toronto at Winnipeg, 4:00 pm EDTThe Toronto Argonauts better have their pass defense ready when they visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday. The Argos beat the Bombers by a touchdown, 34-27, in their last contest way back in Week 6. That was during the Argonauts' busiest week of the season when they played a pair of games in four days. The oddsmakers have opened Toronto as a slim 2.5-point favorite against Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers' playoff chances are razor-thin, but even so they looked like a team on a mission last week while ripping apart the Lions 44-23. WR Milt Stegall had a huge day with 234 yards and four touchdowns with only four receptions. Quarterback Kevin Glenn couldn't be stopped either, as he threw for 410 yards with five touchdown strikes and one interception. The Bombers' offense has really been rolling and has posted three straight OVERs. The Argonauts lost to Edmonton 17-13 last week and lost sole possession of first place in the East. The Toronto defense has been on their game lately, allowing only 59 total points in their last four games. Struggling offensively, Toronto is only 2-2 during that stretch and has posted four straight UNDERs.

Tiger-Cats/Stampeders clash set for Friday
Their last meeting was September 17, 2005 and the Tiger-Cats have been waiting for their chance to avenge that 39-17 loss ever since.
After losing last week, Greg Marshall's team looks to bounce back with a solid showing on the road Friday in Calgary. They were 3 point underdogs in that game, which went over the total of 56.
Oddsmakers like the Stamps in this one, opening them as 10-point favorites at home. The total opens at 53.5.
Meanwhile, at McMahon Stadium, the underdog Stampeders were losing to the Alouettes 32-11. The game was a Montreal cover and an under play.
The Tiger-Cats need some production from their passing game. They rank 8th in the league, averaging 247.4 yards per game through the air. The receivers need to make some plays this week.
Some trends to consider: Tiger-Cats are 1-5-0 ATS in their last 6 away gamesTiger-Cats are 2-4-1 ATS in their last 7 games against the StampedersTiger-Cats are 3-7-0 SU in their last 10 games after being .5 to 3 point underdogsTiger-Cats are 3-7-0 ATS in their last 10 games after being .5 to 3 point underdogsStampeders are 4-1-0 ATS in their last 5 gamesStampeders are 4-1-0 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring 10 to 20 pointsStampeders are 4-2-0 ATS in their last 6 home gamesStampeders are 4-2-0 OU in their last 6 games at home against Tiger-Cats

Roughriders visit Eskimos in division tilt
If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty when the Roughriders visits division rival Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday.
Sporting a 9-6 overall record and a 4-3 mark within the division, the Eskimos aim to knock the Roughriders (5-2 in the division) for a loss.
The Roughriders will be looking to prove oddsmakers wrong in this one, as they come into Saturday's action as 4-point underdogs. The over/under opened at 50.
The Roughriders come off a 38-34 loss against the Alouettes, a game where they were 1-point underdogs. The game went over the closing total of 54.5.
The Eskimos come off a 17-13 win against the Argonauts, a game where they were a 2.5-point underdog. The game went under the closing total of 48.
Edmonton knows that beating the Roughriders depends on stopping the run. Saskatchewan will hit them with a ground game that has averaged 144.0 yards per game this season, #1 in the league.

Power Rankings - Week 6
And then there was one. The Indianapolis Colts handily defeated the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and stand as the only undefeated team in the league heading into Week 6 of the season. The three other teams that went into Week 5 with perfect records all lost - the Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals. That means the Colts stay atop the list this week, and they can improve their mark to 6-0 (and ensure they keep the No. 1 ranking) by defeating the St. Louis Rams at the RCA Dome on the next edition of Monday Night Football. The Redskins, Bucs, and Bengals all slip this week, but not as much as they might have if the teams around them in the rankings were winning. The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a bad loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Atlanta Falcons played without Michael Vick and fell to the New England Patriots, and the San Diego Chargers were dropped by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. In fact, with most teams at or within a game of the .500 mark about two-thirds of the Power Rankings has become a toss-up; basically, outside of a few standouts we still don't really know who is going to be good this season. Against-the-spread the standings aren't any more clear. Although the Colts are 5-0 on the season, they're a more mediocre 3-2 ATS. The league's top ATS team has been the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are 4-1, while the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns are all 3-1 ATS on the season. At the other end of the scale, picking the St. Louis Rams (1-4), Arizona Cardinals (1-4), Baltimore Ravens (1-3), Houston Texans (1-3), or Minnesota Vikings (1-3) to win ATS has been a money-losing venture to this point. Here is the Week 6 edition of the NFL Power Rankings. 01 - Indianapolis Colts 5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 01)Might as well have had a bye last week, as the 49ers didn't put up much of a fight in their contest. 02 - Pittsburgh Steelers 3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS (Last Week 03)Picked up a win over San Diego on Monday, but Ben Roethlisberger ended the game with his knee wrapped in ice. 03 - Denver Broncos 4-1 SU, 2-2-1 ATS (Last Week 08)Jake Plummer went 10-of-25 for only 92 yards passing versus the Redskins, but they held on for the victory. 04 - New England Patriots 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 07)Tom Brady was good in their win against the Falcons, but the defense didn't look so hot versus a second-string QB. 05 - Atlanta Falcons 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 04)Michael Vick's late scratch from Sunday's game must've caused some distress for those with cash on the Falcons. 06 - Jacksonville Jaguars 3-2 SU, 4-1 ATS (Last Week 13)Contained the Bengals' attack enough to pick up a win on Sunday night; next get to face the Steelers in Pittsburgh. 07 - Cincinnati Bengals 4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 05)Failed in their effort to bump their record to 5-0; will be looking to rebound next week with a game in Tennessee. 08 - Carolina Panthers 3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 12)Had to rally to defeat the Cardinals last week; Steve Smith had two touchdown catches in the 24-20 victory. 09 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 06)We knew it couldn't last forever, but falling from the ranks of the unbeaten by scoring only field goals is still ugly. 10 - Philadelphia Eagles 3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 02)Completely outplayed by the Cowboys last week, with QB Donovan McNabb throwing for only 131 yards. 11 - New York Giants 3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS (Last Week 11)We're beginning to see the family resemblance with Eli; come off their bye week to take on the Cowboys in Dallas. 12 - Washington Redskins 3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS (Last Week 09)A failed two-point conversion attempt late in last week's game versus Denver sent them to their first loss of the year. 13 - San Diego Chargers 2-3 SU, 2-2-1 ATS (Last Week 10)Couldn't hold onto a lead in the fourth quarter on Monday night, as the Steelers booted a late field goal for the win. 14 - Kansas City Chiefs 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS (Last Week 14)Had a week to stew about that loss to the Eagles, and will return to the field to play the Redskins on Sunday. 15 - Seattle Seahawks 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 16)Got a monkey off their back with that win against the Rams, and now have a lead in the NFC West division. 16 - Dallas Cowboys 3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 20)Drew Bledsoe had a good game against the Eagles: 24-of-35 for 289 yards passing and three touchdown strikes. 17 - St. Louis Rams 2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS (Last Week 15)Losing at home to the Seahawks was a blow, especially with Seattle's top two receivers out for the contest. 18 - Detroit Lions 2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS (Last Week 21)Joey Harrington threw for only 97 yards last week, but the Lions' running game led them to a win over the Ravens. 19 - New York Jets 2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 23)Vinny Testaverde could only lead the offense to a 14-point effort, but it was enough for them to beat the Bucs. 20 - Buffalo Bills 2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 24)Kelly Holcomb led them to a win over the rival Dolphins on the weekend, and the job should continue to be his. 21 - Cleveland Browns 2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS (Last Week 26)Trent Dilfer found Antonio Bryant in the end zone twice late in the game last week to give the Browns the win. 22 - Minnesota Vikings 1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS (Last Week 22)Had a bye week to regroup from a poor start to the season, and will face the struggling Bears this weekend. 23 - Miami Dolphins 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS (Last Week 17)Gus Frerotte tossed two touchdown passes last week, but the three interceptions didn't help them versus the Bills. 24 - Baltimore Ravens 1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS (Last Week 18)Doesn't much matter who your quarterback is if you're going to allow the opposition to score 35 points in a game. 25 - New Orleans Saints 2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 19)The loss that dropped them under the .500 mark was a bad one - the Packers scored 52 unanswered points Sunday. 26 - Tennessee Titans 2-3 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 29)No one's going to give them a medal for topping the Texans, but it did inch their record closer to the .500 mark. 27 - Oakland Raiders 1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS (Last Week 27)Momentum from their win over the Cowboys was halted by their bye week; get the Chargers this weekend. 28 - Green Bay Packers 1-4 SU, 3-2 ATS (Last Week 31)Looks like Brett Favre wasn't happy about that winless mark, as evidenced by the beating they gave to the Saints. 29 - Chicago Bears 1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS (Last Week 25)Kyle Orton threw for only 117 yards (plus a touchdown) in their loss to the Browns. The job isn't getting done. 30 - Arizona Cardinals 1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS (Last Week 28)Were up 17-10 on the Panthers at halftime in last week's game, but they couldn't make that lead hold up. 31 - San Francisco 49ers 1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS (Last Week 30)Rookie QB Alex Smith's line versus the Colts: 9-of-23 passing, 74 yards, zero touchdowns, four interceptions. 32 - Houston Texans 0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS (Last Week 32)Playing the Titans at home was a great chance for them to pick up that first victory. Too bad they blew it.

Belmont Park will be the scene less then three weeks from now, as the 22nd running of the Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championships comes into your living room. AndOver $14 million will be up for grabs as the best International and North American horses come together for on last battle in 2005. Not sure about you, but I know I am eagerly waiting the return of Afleet Alex and hopefully he can repeat his performance that seen him finish third in the Kentucky Derby and winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. He has been off with an injury since June. Had a good workout on September 30 and is expected to make a start somewhere on the weekend of October 15 then on to the Classic.

Afleet Alex took another huge stride in his comeback with a solid half-mile workout Friday at Belmont Park. With regular rider Jeremy Rose aboard, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner breezed a half-mile in 46.02 seconds, the fastest work of 42 horses at the same distance. Last week, Afleet Alex had his first timed workout -- five furlongs in 59.85 -- since being sidelined with a hairline fracture of his left-front canon bone July 21. The 3-year-old colt had surgery six days later the plan is to get to the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont on Oct. 29.
Ritchey most likely will run Afleet Alex in next Friday's seven-furlong Perryville Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. It would be the colt's first race since winning the Belmont on June 11. Afleet Alex won the Preakness despite nearly falling to his knees when bumped by Scrappy T at the top of the stretch.
Hurricane Run won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on the famed Longchamp course Sunday, giving trainer Andre Fabre a sixth victory in Europe's most prestigious horse race. The 3-year-old colt, the favorite ridden by Kieren Fallon, edged Westerner near the line. Bago, last year's winner, finished third on the 1.5-mile track in Bois de Boulogne. The race was run on a track softened by rain the previous two days.
Alan Cooper, racing manager for Bago's owners, the Niarchos family, said his horse was hindered by the soft track. ``The pace of the race was a bit slower than we would have liked,'' Cooper said. ``He was making up a lot of ground at the end. He will go to the Breeders' Cup now.''
Tabor said he also is considering Hurricane Run for the Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park in New York on Oct. 29. Hurricane Run won last month's Prix Niel, prep for the Arc. Nine of the last 12 winners of the Prix Niel went on to win the Arc. Fabre's other Arc victories came in 1987, '92, '94, '97 and '98:
Don't Get Mad used a strong closing surge to beat favorite and Preakness Stakes runner-up Scrappy T by three lengths Saturday in the Indiana Derby. Scrappy T finished second, and Thor's Echo nosed out Purim for third.
With the outside post position, Don't Get Mad, ridden by Brice Blanc, broke well from the gate. Blanc then eased Stephen Got Even to the inside as Thor's Echo and Felipe Martinez led the way through the first turn. Down the backstretch, Don't Get Mad made his move toward the leaders of the nine-horse race and was within striking distance.
In the final strides, the 3-year-old that finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby pulled away for trainer Ron Ellis and owner B. Wayne Hughes. Don't Get Mad, the second choice on the board, paid $7.20 to win the 11th annual Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park. It was a warmup for several of the horses before the Breeders' Cup later this month. The win was his third in nine starts and he increased his career bankroll to more than $780,000.
One horse that I will be having a good look at is Frank Brother’s First Samurai, who has been dominating in the two year old ranks. Taking the lead from rival Henny Hughes in the stretch, First Samurai pulled off to a 2 3/4 -length victory in Saturday's $500,000 Champagne Stakes at rain-drenched Belmont Park. The 2-year-old colt's win improved his perfect mark to 4-for-4 and firmly established First Samurai as the favorite for the $1.5 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont on Oct. 29.
Over the next 18 days we will try and get you prepared for the big day, with an up close and personal look at several of the contending horses, trainers, jockeys and owners.

Monday, October 10 Edmonton at Toronto, 1:00 pm EDT The Eskimos and Argonauts face-off in the first Thanksgiving Day game on Monday afternoon. The Argos slipped past the Eskimos 22-18 as a 6.5-point underdog back in Week 9. Damon Allen was solid in that game, tossing three touchdown passes and no interceptions in the win. The oddsmakers expect a repeat performance on Monday, opening Toronto as a 2.5-point favorite. Edmonton is coming off an embarrassing 40-14 loss to the Tiger-Cats only one week after handing the Lions their first loss of the season. Ricky Ray had one of his worst games of the season, completing only 21-of-33 passes for 217 yards with no touchdown passes and a pair of costly interceptions. Which Eskimos team will show up this week? The squad that took down the Lions or the ragged bunch that was routed by Hamilton? Toronto got a gift from the CFL schedule-maker last week against the flailing Renegades. The Argos defeated Ottawa 29-18 as a 9.5-point favorite to maintain their hold onto first place in the East. BC at Winnipeg, 4:00 pm EDT In the later Turkey Day game, the B.C. Lions head into Winnipeg to try and snap their two-game losing streak. This is the first time these teams have clashed this season after the Lions posted two wins versus the Bombers last season. This game was kept off the board early in the week due to the questionable status of Lions' quarterback Dave Dickenson. Check back on game day for the current line. After opening the season with 11 straight wins the Lions have faltered recently to drop their last two games. Last week Dave Dickenson was knocked out with a concussion and the Lions' hopes went with him in a 28-19 loss to Saskatchewan. If Dickenson can't go this week the starting nod will go to Buck Pierce who has been effective when leading the Lions' offense during intermittent stretches this season. The Blue Bombers went back to their losing ways last week as they got thumped 42-23 by the Montreal Alouettes. The Blue Bombers' defense could be in luck with Dickenson possibly out, because they currently sit last in the CFL allowing 451 yards per game.

Gameday Preview: Oct 9Week 5 of the NFL schedule is chock full of statement games, including QB Carson Palmer and the surprising Cincinnati Bengals looking to secure a measure of respect around the league with a road game in Jacksonville. Here's a closer look at four of the best matchups on the Week 5 sched: New England (2-2) at Atlanta (3-1) - 1:00 pm EDTThe defending Super Bowl champions are facing the kind of adversity that can crush a team's confidence and send them into a tailspin. After getting pounded 41-17 last week by the San Diego Chargers, the injury-riddled Pats will take their wounded psyche into the Georgia Dome where Warrick Dunn and the NFL's top rushing attack will be waiting with no mercy on their minds. The host Atlanta Falcons have raced out to a 3-1 start this season, despite the fact that Vick has not been completely healthy for much of the early going. He tweaked his left hamstring in Week 2 during a 21-18 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and last week suffered an injury to his right knee during the Falcons' 30-10 mauling of the Minnesota Vikings. After MRI results came back negative earlier this week Vick was listed as probable, until Saturday when his status was downgraded to questionable. If Vick is unable to start, Matt Schaub will step in to make his second career start. Feature back Warrick Dunn is averaging a huge 5.6 yards per carry this season on 70 rushes for 394 yards, combining with the elusive Vick to power the running game to a league-leading average of 209 yards per game. The Patriots' patchwork defense, meanwhile, is ranked 23rd against the run. Pro Bowl QB Tom Brady will have to move the chains with lengthy drives (and put some points on the board) to keep their defense off the field as much as possible. To do this, Brady will rely heavily on the league's 3rd-ranked passing attack, which has averaged 283 yards per game so far this season. This is a litmus test for both clubs, if either has designs on making some serious noise among the league's elite this season. In their last meeting back in 2001, the Pats defeated Chris Chandler and the Falcons 24-10 at the Georgia Dome. Clearly, even a wobbly-legged Vick is more elusive than Chandler, who was sacked six times in that encounter. Also of note, the Patriots have won eight straight games in domed stadiums.Atlanta opened as a 2-point favorite. Philadelphia (3-1) at Dallas (2-2) - 4:15 pm EDTThe Philadelphia Eagles will bring the NFL's top-ranked passing attack into Texas Stadium as Terrell Owens looks to wreak havoc against the secondary that all but ended his season last December. Bruised but not broken, QB Donovan McNabb will look for Owens early and often against the Cowboys. McNabb leads the NFL with 1,333 yards passing and 11 touchdowns, while Owens is the league's leading receiver with 32 catches for 506 yards. Owens suffered a broken leg and sprained ankle last December when Dallas safety Roy Williams horse-collared him to the ground with a stomach-turning tackle; the NFL has since outlawed that sort of take-down. But Owens is not the only target who McNabb looks for downfield. L.J. Smith leads all tight ends with 26 receptions, and the under-utilized but ever-dangerous Brian Westbrook leads all running backs with 22 catches. In fact, McNabb is on pace to threaten current Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe's NFL record of 691 passing attempts in a single season, set back in 1994. Reunited in Dallas with his former coach Bill Parcells, Bledsoe has been solid if not spectacular while leading the Cowboys to a decent start this season. Bledsoe is rated seventh among all quarterbacks with a rating of 96.2 on 74-of-124 passing for 1,062 yards, with seven TD tosses and only three picks. Big things were expected from running back Julius Jones this season but he has so far failed to deliver, averaging 3.5 yards on 96 carries and failing to rush for 100 yards in any game this season. The Eagles went on to win the "horse-collar game" against Dallas last December by a slim 12-7 margin, their ninth victory over the Cowboys in 10 encounters.Philadelphia opened as a 3-point favorite. Washington (3-0) at Denver (3-1) - 4:15 pm EDTWe'll find out on Sunday in the thin air of INVESCO Field against a quality opponent if the Redskins are NFC East contenders or pretenders. While the Redskins' unblemished season slate looks impressive, they have been lucky to escape all three games with dramatic victories over the Bears, the Cowboys, and the Seahawks by a combined total of six points. Veteran QB Mark Brunell has been cool under pressure, ex-Broncos running back Clinton Portis has been solid, and offseason acquisition Santana Moss has been spectacular running under bombs from Brunell at critical junctures in each of the Redskins' first three games. In fact, 14 of Moss' 15 receptions have resulted in first downs, including 10 catches on third down. On defense, the Redskins have allowed a meager 37 points, the lowest total in the NFC, and haven't allowed an opposing runner to reach 100 yards in eight straight games. The Broncos, as usual, will provide a stiff test for the Redskins' run defense. Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell have been a formidable one-two punch out of the backfield behind QB Jake Plummer, helping the Broncos average more than 136 yards rushing per game to rank third in the NFL. And, of course, there's the home-field advantage in the Rocky Mountain state: the Broncos are 16-4 at home against NFC opponents since Mike Shanahan assumed the reins.Denver opened as a 7-point favorite. Cincinnati (4-0) at Jacksonville (2-2) - 8:30 pm EDTCarson Palmer's name is starting to come up when discussion turns to the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. Can the rest of the team keep up with him, and push the Bengals into the upper-tier of the league? Palmer currently ranks 2nd among all quarterbacks with a passer rating of 112.2 and is tied for 5th overall with 1,062 passing yards, completing 94-of-131 attempts with nine majors and only two interceptions. WR Chad Johnson has been Palmer's top target, hauling in 26 catches for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh stepped into the limelight last week, snaring eight balls for 105 yards in the Bengals' 16-10 victory at home against the Houston Texans. The real story Sunday night, however, will be how Cincinnati's offensive line reacts to the loss of veteran centers Rich Braham and Larry Moore, who were injured in the win. Moore was placed on injured reserve with a dislocated knee, while Braham is questionable, meaning rookie center Eric Ghiaciuc will likely be forced into action. The Bengals also signed veteran center Larry Turner, formerly of the Rams, this week to help fill in the gaps. Jacksonville is also hurting along the O-line, but not because of injuries. The men in the trenches have allowed 13 sacks so far this season, forcing QB Byron Leftwich to run for his life and limiting the Jags' offensive output to 303.5 yards per game, 24th in the NFL. Wideout Jimmy Smith has been a bright spot on offense, scoring four majors and registering 13 first downs on only 17 receptions with an average of 19.4 yards per catch.Jacksonville opened as a 2.5-point favorite.
