NFL Power Rankings - Week 3
Time to give someone else a chance at the top spot - and that someone this week is the 2-0 Indianapolis Colts. The New England Patriots' loss to the Carolina Panthers drops them to No. 3 this week, with a bunch of difficult games ahead before they face Indianapolis on Monday night in Week 9. Rising to No. 2 this week are the Pittsburgh Steelers, who play New England in Week 3 and will need to win that game in order to stay at these lofty heights. Rounding out the top five are the Philadelphia Eagles, who pounded the 49ers to seemingly get back on track, and the Kansas City Chiefs, who look like they have rebounded from a forgettable 2004 season. So we know who's winning this season, but who is giving the football bettors the money? The following teams have perfect ATS records after two weeks: Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Kansas City, New York Giants, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. In contrast, the following teams have yet to pick up an ATS win this season: Baltimore, Houston, Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Green Bay, Minnesota, and Arizona. The highest-scoring teams have been the New York Giants (69 points over two games), Cincinnati (64), Pittsburgh (61), Philadelphia (52), and Kansas City (50). The lowest scoring? Houston (14), Baltimore (17), Minnesota (21), Washington (23), and Detroit (23). On defense, the best point-preventers have been Indianapolis (10 points allowed over two games), Pittsburgh (14), Chicago (15), Tampa Bay (16), and Philadelphia (17), while the worst defenses have been found in San Francisco (67), Minnesota (61), Arizona (59), Oakland (53), Denver (51), and Cleveland (51). Here is the Week 3 edition of the NFL Power Rankings. 01 - Indianapolis Colts 2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 02)Allowed only 10 points combined in their first two games; has their defense really taken that next step? 02 - Pittsburgh Steelers 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 04)Have flattened two opponents in a row, with Willie Parker running wild in each of those victories. 03 - New England Patriots 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 01)Laid an egg versus the Panthers, and their schedule from hell won't cut them any breaks in the weeks ahead. 04 - Philadelphia Eagles 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 05)A Week 2 date with the hapless 49ers was just what the doctor ordered for Donovan McNabb and company. 05 - Kansas City Chiefs 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 07)Now 2-0 to start the season; will try to pick up their third straight win when they play Denver on Monday night. 06 - Atlanta Falcons 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 03)Held Seattle scoreless in three quarters last week - but gave up 21 points in the other one. Vick injury a concern. 07 - Jacksonville Jaguars 1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 06)Held Peyton Manning to 122 yards passing and no touchdowns, but the offense didn't come through for them. 08 - Carolina Panthers 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 12)That Week 1 loss is all forgotten now; managed to beat the Pats without a quality effort from QB Jake Delhomme. 09 - Cincinnati Bengals 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 13)Picked off Daunte Culpepper five times in their win last week. Will try to get to 3-0 versus the Bears this week. 10 - Denver Broncos 1-1 SU, 0-1-1 ATS (Last Week 11)No TD strikes for Jake Plummer versus the Chargers, but he was a decent 23-of-37 for 248 yards passing. 11 - New York Giants 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 22)Tiki Barber ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass Monday night to lead the Giants to that 2-0 mark. 12 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 23)Don't look now, but the Bucs are 2-0, with Carnell Williams (128 yards, 1 touchdown) racking up the yards. 13 - Washington Redskins 2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 24)Two TD catches by Santana Moss in the fourth quarter on Monday night let them start the season a perfect 2-0. 14 - Baltimore Ravens 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS (Last Week 08)Didn't win with Kyle Boller, didn't win without him. Get a bye in Week 3 to try and sort out their issues. 15 - San Diego Chargers 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS (Last Week 09)Starting 0-2 has people wondering if last year was a fluke; need to beat the Giants to avoid falling to 0-3. 16 - Minnesota Vikings 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS (Last Week 10)That vaunted, new-look defense has now given up 61 points over the first two weeks of the season. 17 - New York Jets 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 18)Shut out the Dolphins in the first half last week, then traded touchdowns in the final frame to secure the win. 18 - New Orleans Saints 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 14)Turns out that playing your home opener in your opponent's stadium DOESN'T give you any advantages. 19 - St. Louis Rams 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 20)Their win over the Cardinals last week let them avoid an 0-2 start, and kept the hounds at bay for the time being. 20 - Seattle Seahawks 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 21)Almost blew their Week 2 contest, letting the Falcons come back from 21-0 down to as close as 21-18. 21 - Buffalo Bills 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 15)After looking solid in Week 1, J.P. Losman and the offense stumbled versus the Bucs in their loss last week. 22 - Dallas Cowboys 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 16)Looked like they'd cruise to a win over the Redskins on Monday night, but blew the game in the fourth quarter. 23 - Detroit Lions 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 17)Joey Harrington was brutal in their loss to the Bears, with the five interceptions the number that stands out. 24 - Green Bay Packers 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS (Last Week 19)That loss to the Browns dropped them to 0-2 on the season, and they get to face the 2-0 Bucs this week. 25 - Miami Dolphins 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 25)No more magic for Gus Frerotte? The QB went 20-of-43 for 177 yards in their loss to the Jets in Week 2. 26 - Tennessee Titans 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 30)Took advantage of a floundering Ravens team to pick up their first win last week; next will face the Rams. 27 - Chicago Bears 1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS (Last Week 31)Pounded the Lions for their first win; Thomas Jones ran for 139 yards on 20 carries, and scored two touchdowns. 28 - Cleveland Browns 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 32)Braylon Edwards had three catches for 107 yards and a touchdown in their win over the Packers. 29 - San Francisco 49ers 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS (Last Week 29)You could see that beating by the Eagles coming; get the Cowboys at home in their Week 3 matchup. 30 - Houston Texans 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS (Last Week 26)If this is going to be the year the Texans finish over .500, they'd better start winning some games soon. 31 - Oakland Raiders 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS (Last Week 27)Randy Moss is still piling up the yards in Oakland, but all it has gotten the team so far is an 0-2 start to the season.

College FootballTennessee @ LSUSaturday Sep 24 - 7:45 PM EDT - (ESPN)Tennessee (+6.5)Florida (-6.5)If you liked last week's Tennessee - Florida game, you'll love this week's LSU battle. It'll be another defensive struggle with each team looking to spring the one big play to change the momentum. At home, with the emotion of the game, LSU is favored to win this one by only 6.5 points.
GAME 2NFLOakland @ PhiladelphiaSunday Sep 25 - 1:00 PM EDT - (CBS)Oakland (+8)The Raiders displayed their big-play passing game for the second consecutive week, but also ended up losing for the second consecutive week, as the team lost to rival Kansas City 23-17. Randy Moss continued to impress with 127 yards and a long touchdown reception, and the offense moved the ball most of the night -- except when it mattered most. Having come up with a solid drive to reach Kansas City's 10-yard line late in the game, the Raiders couldn't finish the drive off, going incomplete on fourth down. "We're not lacking for confidence, we're just lacking for wins," Porter said. "It's dumb to get frustrated now, it's Week 2. We have 14 more games to play."
Philadelphia (-8)It didn't take long for the Eagles to show that the offense that was held to 10 points in the opener was going to be just fine. Behind Donovan McNabb's four first-half touchdown passes -- two of them to Terrell Owens -- the Eagles jumped out 28-0 and never looked back in a 42-3 win over SF 49ers. McNabb finished with 342 yards and five TDs in three quarters and Owens, who spent eight seasons in San Francisco, had 143 yards receiving. "When we're in the field and everything is clicking, everyone is smiling," McNabb said. The Eagles improved to 1-1.
GAME 3NFLNew England @ PittsburghMonday Sep 25 - 4:25 PM EDT - (CBS)Patriots (+3)This time, there would be no last-second heroics. In a rematch of Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Patriots fell short against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, with a 27-17 loss that sent the Pats to 1-1 on the season. The Patriots running attack never got going as Corey Dillon finished with 36 yards on the ground, while quarterback Tom Brady, under heavy pressure from an aggressive Panthers defense, completed 23 of 44 passes for 270 yards with one touchdown and two turnovers. "We can't play like this," coach Bill Belichick said. "We have to play better. We have to coach better."
Steelers (-3)After a 34-7 victory in Week 1, Pittsburgh picked up where it left off and won at Houston 27-7. Ben Roethlisberger had another efficient performance (14-for-21, 254 yards, 139.8 passer rating) and threw two touchdown passes to Hines Ward. The Steelers (2-0) scored the first four times it had the ball and built a 20-0 lead. "[Starting fast] takes the crowd out of it," Steelers coach Bill Cowher said. "Also playing smart, not turning the football over and no forced penalties. You try and take away the big plays. If you can do that, then the crowd never gets into it." Willie Parker rushed for 111 yards and Pittsburgh's final touchdown. Meanwhile, the defense sacked David Carr eight times and held Domanick Davis to 59 yards on 15 carries. In regular-season games, Roethlisberger now is 15-0 as a starter in the NFL and Pittsburgh has won 16 in a row.
GAME 4 - MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALLNFLKansas City @ DenverMonday Sep 26 - 9:00 PM EDT - (ABC)Chiefs (+3)For the second consecutive weekend, it was the Kansas City Chiefs defense, not the team's offense, that made headlines. Nursing a six-point lead late against the Raiders, the Chiefs defense kept the Raiders out of the end zone, preserving a 23-17 win in Oakland. Oakland had moved the ball down to the Chiefs' 10-yard line in the final minutes, but a last-ditch pass on fourth down fell incomplete, and the Chiefs improved to 2-0 on the year. Kansas City had trouble running the ball with Willie Roaf out of the lineup, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. But Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes managed to find the end zone and Trent Green led the team on several long drives. "We knew the yards were going to be hard," Johnson said. "We knew they would try to shut down the run as much as they could. Trent did a good job hitting the receivers on some third-down passes."
Broncos (-3)After an embarrassing 34-10 loss in Week 1, the Broncos were booed off the field after a lackluster first half in the home opener. But Champ Bailey changed the momentum by returning an interception for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, and Denver edged the Chargers 20-17 on Jason Elam’s 41-yrd field goal with :05 remaining. Denver fumbled the ball away on its first possession, then gave up rushing touchdowns on back-to-back possessions and trailed 14-3 at halftime. But Bailey's big play made it 14-10, and Kyle Johnson's 3-yard run made it 17-14 midway through the fourth quarter. Desperate to avoid starting 0-2, Denver held San Diego to 51 total net yards and one field goal in the second half. "We've got a great defense, a great front-seven," Bailey said. "There's no way we shouldn't play the way we did in the second half every week." Jake Plummer, who was intercepted in the red zone in the third quarter, wound up completing 23 of 37 passes for 248 yards, and guided a 12-play 48-yard drive that nearly ate up the final 5:21 of the game.

400 Laps on The Monster Mile
This is one of the races that often will get overlooked on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup schedule except this time of year. It's not a flashy race but more of a 400-mile grind as a narrow track means one slip and big crashes will ensue.
Dover is a track where you either hit the setup or you don't. It is very difficult to make effective changes during the race if you're not already pretty close to perfect. This leads to drivers winning here in bunches. Tony Stewart swept both races in 2000, Jimmie Johnson in 2002 and Ryan Newman has won three of the last five here. With Greg Biffle winning here earlier this year he should be the odds on favorite. For my pick this week I'll go with the man that swept both races in 2000. Tony Stewart is ready to return to Victory Lane.
The Track: Dover Downs is a high-banked one-mile concrete oval. The high-grip surface lets drivers really get aggressive and push the car, but at the expense of tire wear.
On a typical race day in Dover you'll see a number of different strategies play out. The race can be won by charging hard all day, by laying back and saving your tires for the end, or even by playing the fuel mileage game. You just never know what Dover will bring.
The Reality of this Track: Dover isn't a race track where you try to make a positive move in the points. You just try to survive and avoid a bad point’s day!
Our picks to win: Tony Stewart. Other strong possibilities: Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin or Jeremy Mayfield.

The Yankees and Red Sox battle is getting to the point where we begin to refer to the struggle for supremacy as a “blink game, which means what it implies, as the first team to blink is done like dinner. Both teams are doing it with superior offense and suspect pitching and that’s what makes this tussle a bugger to handicap!
I don’t even want to begin to imagine what next weekend will be like in Beantown when the Red Sox invite Jeter, Gonzalez and the rest of the clan over for the last kick at the can. Boston goes for the sweep in Tampa tonight and after scoring 15 last night, they may have wished they had saved a few hits for tonight’s starter lefty Scott Kazmir. He is 2-1 against the Red Sox in his career with a very nice 2.18 ERA in 33 innings of work, but the base on balls need to be limited, as he has allowed 90 free passes in 176 innings this season.
The Red Sox are smiling though as they send Tim Wakefield to the hill and this guy is money in the till when facing Tampa. Boston's veteran right-hander will shoot for his 14th win in 15 career decisions against Tampa Bay when the AL East-leading Red Sox continue a three-game series at Tropicana Field.

Wakefield, who has emerged as Boston's surprising staff ace this year, leading the team in victories and ERA, is 13-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 28 career appearances, including 18 starts, against the Devil Rays.
He didn't dominate Tampa Bay at Fenway Park on Aug. 31, but still emerged with a 7-6 win after allowing five runs and six hits over eight innings. Wakefield's wins against Tampa Bay are his most against any opponent except Detroit. He is 13-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 30 career appearances against the Tigers.
Wakefield is 6-0 with a 1.79 ERA in 15 career outings, including nine starts, at Tropicana Field.
Meanwhile the Yankees will look to down the meek Orioles, before heading home to host the Jays. The Orioles had 18 hits last night, but lost for the 20th time in 30 games and in the process lost catalyst Brian Roberts with a dislocated elbow.
Randy Johnson gets the start and believe it or not he has a career losing record against the Orioles, going just 6-7 in 20 games started. He was tossed from his last start for arguing balls and strikes, but I watched that game and he was all over the place with his pitches.
He should bounce back tonight against a lethargic Orioles team that is playing out the string!
Considering the way Aaron Boone started the season for the Indians, he is really stepping up when it counts in September as he is 9-15 in the past 4 games and has a couple of dingers as well. The Indians send Scott Elarton to the mound and I don’t care for the guy, but he has won three in a row and allowed just 15 hits in the last 21 innings.
White Sox starter John Garland has been very inconsistent of late and has not fared well career wise against the Tribe going 5-8 in 15 starts with an ERA of 5.81.

Another outstanding and telling week in the Big 12, and of course I bagged another featured play of the week with Pitt easily covering the number against Nebraska, which put me at 3-0 on the year. Oklahoma showed how far they have fallen by dropping an embarrassing game to UCLA putting them at 1-2 on the year and they have Texas licking their chops for October 8th, since Mac Brown and the Longhorns have a date with destiny to finally beat OU in the Red River War in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, something he has never done. Missouri bounced back with a revenge game against Troy after a devastating home loss the week before, and Baylor, that's right, The Baylor Bears are undefeated taking care of Army on the road.
Many teams in the Big 12 have a bye week, and a team like Nebraska needs one! The Huskers, at 3-0, are the worst 3-0 in the USA, having the 106th offense in the nation! Bill Callahan's West Coast offense is anemic and a total dud right now. The defense is stellar and keeping them in games, but on deck is Iowa St. and Texas Tech, and then it is off to Baylor for their first road test, and it will not be easy, but the Huskers are 1 of 24 teams in Division I that are undefeated. Interesting match-up next week in LIncoln, where it has been over 30-some years since the Cyclones have won in Lincoln.
COLORADO @ MIAMI -14
The Buffalo's have had over a week off to prepare for the Hurricanes, and Miami is looking forward to a home opener since they are 1-1 with 2 very tough games at Florida State and a 3 OT game against Clemson, and I am sure it is advantage Buffalo's here as the Hurricanes have to be a little beat up and flat. Colorado's QB Klatt has a trio of receivers that can do some damage, and Gary Barnett always seems to rise to the top in big games. Colorado is expect by many to win the Big 12 North, I am not one of them, but they could keep this slightly closer than the spread this Saturday. Interesting that Miami is 4-11 ATS as double digit favorites at home their last 15.
IOWA STATE @ ARMY +17 FRIDAY NIGHT- MY Featured Play of the Week! 3-0 YTD!!
KANSAS STATE -24 vs. North Texas
Big trouble for North Texas here, BIG trouble, they managed 2 points last week in a 54-2 blowout against Tulsa, they were favored by 3, and it gets no better this week against Kansas State. Kansas State had some off field trouble last week when the leading rusher in the nation, RB Thomas Clayton, at 164 yards per game was cited by campus police for assault on an officer trying to impound his car. His status is unknown, but whether he plays or not is a moot point this week in Manhattan, since KSU should name the score. Kansas State has had turnover problems, and as a matter of fact 40 points scored against them were from less than 20 yards after a turnover in opponents territory, and the defense is underrated in terms of points allowed, the numbers are skewed. Kansas State by 35 here.
TEXAS AM vs. TEXAS ST.
Not much to say here, other than to once again say that QB Reggie McNeal is off the map in terms of talent, and is a top 3 NFL prospect for next year. There is no line on this game. The Aggies dismantled SMU last week where the offense rolled up over 500 yards ands McNeal had 100 yards rushing, and 349 yards passing with 5 TD passes and he rushed for 1 more in a 66-8 blowout against a team that beat TCU the week before! No line in this game, and one can only ponder what happens down the road when Texas comes calling to College Station this year in the season finale. WOW, stay tuned folks as the Aggies lost a heartbreaking last second game at Clemson and should start rolling now in conference play.
INDIANA ST @ TEXAS TECH
Worth noting here that no line exists here, but Texas Tech is amassing some impressive numbers, good and bad. They average 711 yards of offense per game, but they have totaled over 270 yards in penalties. Little has it mattered with whipping boys Florida International and Sam Houston State, but they better get the fundamentals down before conference action. Senior QB Chris Hodges is putting up some solid numbers with 9 TD passes, no picks, and 890 yards with a 74% completion rate. Look out for the Red Raiders, they are my sleeper.
That is it for this week, the meat and potatoes of conference action is in full swing next week with crucial games for a ton of teams in the Big 12, and I will be ready to pounce on the books and provide more insight next week, stay tuned.

Sports Bettifng

So many of the good things in life come in pairs, like two all-beef patties, or Venus and Serena Williams. Now we’re going to experience what it feels like to have two Monday Night Football games on the schedule.
It’s not exactly the way things were supposed to happen. The New Orleans Saints had Sunday circled on their calendars as the day the New York Giants would visit the Superdome for the Saints’ home opener. Hurricane Katrina made that impossible. The NFL didn’t appear to have any viable local options for relocating the game on such short notice, so it was moved to Giants Stadium, and it was moved to Monday night because the Jets were slated to welcome the Miami Dolphins to the Swamp.

The original MNF game has the Washington Redskins in Dallas to face the Cowboys. Again because of the quick schedule change, ABC has to do some creative programming to make things work. They’ll show the Giants-Saints matchup at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then cut away to Washington-Dallas when it kicks off at 9:00 p.m. ET. The remainder of the game from Giants Stadium will be shown on ESPN (both networks being owned by Disney). Viewers in the New Orleans and New York markets will instead watch their entire game on ABC while ESPN airs the start of the ‘Skins-Cowboys tilt. If you can make sense of that, you’d make a good network executive - except you’re probably overqualified.
The league is doing what it can to make the best of the situation. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue designated Week 2 as “Hurricane Relief Weekend, and there will be a telethon during the broadcast of the football games. The list of current and former NFL players helping out with the telethon at Times Square in New York is amazing. Gale Sayers and Bart Starr will be on hand, along with the likes of John Elway, Marcus Allen and several members of the Jets. Oh, and Regis Philbin, too.
In the meantime, we have the usual wide range of betting options - times two - for Monday night’s action. The Giants are favored by 3 ½ points against the Saints, partly because the “home game for New Orleans is actually being played in New Jersey, but also because the Giants appear to have the running edge. In the props list for this matchup, the first score is listed at +400 to be a Giants’ rushing touchdown, compared to +500 for a Saints’ TD on the ground. New Orleans allowed 141 yards rushing last week when they beat the Carolina Panthers 23-20 in a game that boiled down to a field-goal kicking contest. Deuce McAllister may be one of the premier running backs in the league, but he could be overshadowed by Tiki Barber this time around.
Running will also be featured in Dallas, except it will probably be the Cowboys’ defensive line running all over Mark Brunell. Although Patrick Ramsey doesn’t do a good job of handling pressure in the pocket, even the savvy Brunell has trouble surviving the onslaught of 300-pounders that regularly slice through Washington’s offensive line like a hot chainsaw through butter. Brunell is priced at -200 to throw an interception Monday night.
We have Dallas favored by six points in this matchup, and the total is just 35 ½. The total illustrates Washington’s anemic offense, as does the props list. The over/under on ‘Skins points is a mere 15 compared to 21 for the Cowboys, and Dallas is listed at -160 to score first.
If you prefer to highlight individual performances for Monday night other than Brunell’s likely fate, action is available on the key players from both games. McAllister is priced at -160 to score a touchdown, as is Dallas RB Julius Jones. Barber is not on the list; instead, the focus is on Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who occasionally shows the football skills of big brother Peyton Manning, but often looks more like Stockard Channing. What will Eli throw first: a touchdown or an interception? We have the TD listed at -150 and the INT at +120, reflecting once again the advantage New York appears to have over the Saints.

Seahawks Soar
Joe Jurevicius celebrates after scoring a touchdown for Seattle, who held on to defeat Atlanta, 21-18. Shaun Alexander rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries and Matt Hasselbeck threw for 281 yards and a pair of scores, as Seattle held off Atlanta, 21-18, at Qwest Field. Hasselbeck completed 20-of-31 passes while Darrell Jackson had eight catches for 131 yards for the Seahawks (1-1), who built a 21-0 halftime lead and held on. Atlanta's Michael Vick had 123 passing yards and a touchdown while adding 43 more on the ground, but injured his left hamstring during a 32-yard run late in the fourth quarter. The star quarterback came out for the team's final drive, but was again removed after being tackled for a loss on third down. Backup Matt Schaub's fourth-down pass for Roddy White was then knocked down by Andre Dyson with 1:35 left to play, and Seattle ran out the clock.

Eric Hinske drove in a pair of runs for Toronto and also knocked Yankee starter Jaret Wright out of the game when his broken bat hit the pitcher. The Blue Jays salvaged the finale of the three-game series and ended New York's six-game winning streak. The Yankees fell 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the AL wild card race as the Indians pounded Kansas City 11-0.
