College FootballTennessee @ LSUSaturday Sep 24 - 7:45 PM EDT - (ESPN)Tennessee (+6.5)Florida (-6.5)If you liked last week's Tennessee - Florida game, you'll love this week's LSU battle. It'll be another defensive struggle with each team looking to spring the one big play to change the momentum. At home, with the emotion of the game, LSU is favored to win this one by only 6.5 points.
GAME 2NFLOakland @ PhiladelphiaSunday Sep 25 - 1:00 PM EDT - (CBS)Oakland (+8)The Raiders displayed their big-play passing game for the second consecutive week, but also ended up losing for the second consecutive week, as the team lost to rival Kansas City 23-17. Randy Moss continued to impress with 127 yards and a long touchdown reception, and the offense moved the ball most of the night -- except when it mattered most. Having come up with a solid drive to reach Kansas City's 10-yard line late in the game, the Raiders couldn't finish the drive off, going incomplete on fourth down. "We're not lacking for confidence, we're just lacking for wins," Porter said. "It's dumb to get frustrated now, it's Week 2. We have 14 more games to play."
Philadelphia (-8)It didn't take long for the Eagles to show that the offense that was held to 10 points in the opener was going to be just fine. Behind Donovan McNabb's four first-half touchdown passes -- two of them to Terrell Owens -- the Eagles jumped out 28-0 and never looked back in a 42-3 win over SF 49ers. McNabb finished with 342 yards and five TDs in three quarters and Owens, who spent eight seasons in San Francisco, had 143 yards receiving. "When we're in the field and everything is clicking, everyone is smiling," McNabb said. The Eagles improved to 1-1.
GAME 3NFLNew England @ PittsburghMonday Sep 25 - 4:25 PM EDT - (CBS)Patriots (+3)This time, there would be no last-second heroics. In a rematch of Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Patriots fell short against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, with a 27-17 loss that sent the Pats to 1-1 on the season. The Patriots running attack never got going as Corey Dillon finished with 36 yards on the ground, while quarterback Tom Brady, under heavy pressure from an aggressive Panthers defense, completed 23 of 44 passes for 270 yards with one touchdown and two turnovers. "We can't play like this," coach Bill Belichick said. "We have to play better. We have to coach better."
Steelers (-3)After a 34-7 victory in Week 1, Pittsburgh picked up where it left off and won at Houston 27-7. Ben Roethlisberger had another efficient performance (14-for-21, 254 yards, 139.8 passer rating) and threw two touchdown passes to Hines Ward. The Steelers (2-0) scored the first four times it had the ball and built a 20-0 lead. "[Starting fast] takes the crowd out of it," Steelers coach Bill Cowher said. "Also playing smart, not turning the football over and no forced penalties. You try and take away the big plays. If you can do that, then the crowd never gets into it." Willie Parker rushed for 111 yards and Pittsburgh's final touchdown. Meanwhile, the defense sacked David Carr eight times and held Domanick Davis to 59 yards on 15 carries. In regular-season games, Roethlisberger now is 15-0 as a starter in the NFL and Pittsburgh has won 16 in a row.
GAME 4 - MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALLNFLKansas City @ DenverMonday Sep 26 - 9:00 PM EDT - (ABC)Chiefs (+3)For the second consecutive weekend, it was the Kansas City Chiefs defense, not the team's offense, that made headlines. Nursing a six-point lead late against the Raiders, the Chiefs defense kept the Raiders out of the end zone, preserving a 23-17 win in Oakland. Oakland had moved the ball down to the Chiefs' 10-yard line in the final minutes, but a last-ditch pass on fourth down fell incomplete, and the Chiefs improved to 2-0 on the year. Kansas City had trouble running the ball with Willie Roaf out of the lineup, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. But Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes managed to find the end zone and Trent Green led the team on several long drives. "We knew the yards were going to be hard," Johnson said. "We knew they would try to shut down the run as much as they could. Trent did a good job hitting the receivers on some third-down passes."
Broncos (-3)After an embarrassing 34-10 loss in Week 1, the Broncos were booed off the field after a lackluster first half in the home opener. But Champ Bailey changed the momentum by returning an interception for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, and Denver edged the Chargers 20-17 on Jason Elam’s 41-yrd field goal with :05 remaining. Denver fumbled the ball away on its first possession, then gave up rushing touchdowns on back-to-back possessions and trailed 14-3 at halftime. But Bailey's big play made it 14-10, and Kyle Johnson's 3-yard run made it 17-14 midway through the fourth quarter. Desperate to avoid starting 0-2, Denver held San Diego to 51 total net yards and one field goal in the second half. "We've got a great defense, a great front-seven," Bailey said. "There's no way we shouldn't play the way we did in the second half every week." Jake Plummer, who was intercepted in the red zone in the third quarter, wound up completing 23 of 37 passes for 248 yards, and guided a 12-play 48-yard drive that nearly ate up the final 5:21 of the game.
