So many of the good things in life come in pairs, like two all-beef patties, or Venus and Serena Williams. Now we’re going to experience what it feels like to have two Monday Night Football games on the schedule.
It’s not exactly the way things were supposed to happen. The New Orleans Saints had Sunday circled on their calendars as the day the New York Giants would visit the Superdome for the Saints’ home opener. Hurricane Katrina made that impossible. The NFL didn’t appear to have any viable local options for relocating the game on such short notice, so it was moved to Giants Stadium, and it was moved to Monday night because the Jets were slated to welcome the Miami Dolphins to the Swamp.
The original MNF game has the Washington Redskins in Dallas to face the Cowboys. Again because of the quick schedule change, ABC has to do some creative programming to make things work. They’ll show the Giants-Saints matchup at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then cut away to Washington-Dallas when it kicks off at 9:00 p.m. ET. The remainder of the game from Giants Stadium will be shown on ESPN (both networks being owned by Disney). Viewers in the New Orleans and New York markets will instead watch their entire game on ABC while ESPN airs the start of the ‘Skins-Cowboys tilt. If you can make sense of that, you’d make a good network executive - except you’re probably overqualified.
The league is doing what it can to make the best of the situation. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue designated Week 2 as “Hurricane Relief Weekend, and there will be a telethon during the broadcast of the football games. The list of current and former NFL players helping out with the telethon at Times Square in New York is amazing. Gale Sayers and Bart Starr will be on hand, along with the likes of John Elway, Marcus Allen and several members of the Jets. Oh, and Regis Philbin, too.
In the meantime, we have the usual wide range of betting options - times two - for Monday night’s action. The Giants are favored by 3 ½ points against the Saints, partly because the “home game for New Orleans is actually being played in New Jersey, but also because the Giants appear to have the running edge. In the props list for this matchup, the first score is listed at +400 to be a Giants’ rushing touchdown, compared to +500 for a Saints’ TD on the ground. New Orleans allowed 141 yards rushing last week when they beat the Carolina Panthers 23-20 in a game that boiled down to a field-goal kicking contest. Deuce McAllister may be one of the premier running backs in the league, but he could be overshadowed by Tiki Barber this time around.
Running will also be featured in Dallas, except it will probably be the Cowboys’ defensive line running all over Mark Brunell. Although Patrick Ramsey doesn’t do a good job of handling pressure in the pocket, even the savvy Brunell has trouble surviving the onslaught of 300-pounders that regularly slice through Washington’s offensive line like a hot chainsaw through butter. Brunell is priced at -200 to throw an interception Monday night.
We have Dallas favored by six points in this matchup, and the total is just 35 ½. The total illustrates Washington’s anemic offense, as does the props list. The over/under on ‘Skins points is a mere 15 compared to 21 for the Cowboys, and Dallas is listed at -160 to score first.
If you prefer to highlight individual performances for Monday night other than Brunell’s likely fate, action is available on the key players from both games. McAllister is priced at -160 to score a touchdown, as is Dallas RB Julius Jones. Barber is not on the list; instead, the focus is on Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who occasionally shows the football skills of big brother Peyton Manning, but often looks more like Stockard Channing. What will Eli throw first: a touchdown or an interception? We have the TD listed at -150 and the INT at +120, reflecting once again the advantage New York appears to have over the Saints.
