Many football fans will, especially the ones that love to bet on the New England Patriots are jumping up and down with glee today after the remarkable performance by the New England Patriots yesterday in Pittsburgh.
Decimated with injuries in the defensive backfield and along the all important offensive line, the Patriots shocked the Pittsburgh Steelers and revealed several flaws in the Steelers Big Ben Roethlisberger.
Fans that are old enough to remember the three famous fights that Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier had thirty years ago, can understand what I mean, when I suggest that the Patriots like those boxers, will never be the same after yesterdays physically draining win.
Yes Tom Brady is magnificent and kicker Adam Vinateri is the best kicker in the history of the NFL, but this league is a war of attrition and the Patriots are falling like flies. In handicapping football games, the guys in the know will tell you that the offensive line is the key to team’s fortunes. A missed block here and there and the grind of a 16-game schedule, demand depth at this position!
Starting two rookies in Logan Mankins and Nick Kaczur and losing Matt Light will be the downfall, even more so then Rodney Harrison’s injury. Pittsburgh had receivers open all day yesterday and Chad Scott, Duane Starks and Tyrone Poole will get exposed.
Harrison is the guy on defense though that has been a mainstay for the champs and hey what goes around comes around. His leg injury was a the result of a player rolling up on his knee and not the result of a vicious hit, which is how Harrison has taken out several players in his career.
They host the San Diego Chargers next weekend at home which is a bonus for the young offensive line that will be able to hear Brady’s signals, but I look for Wade Phillips Charger defense, to be much better then they were against the Giants on Sunday.
Phillips has tons of experience going up against the Patriots, during his days in the same division when he coached Buffalo. The Patriots defense may try and load up to stop the exploits of LT, but this will leave their suspect defense vulnerable against tight end Antonio Gates.
Mark down the date September 25, 2005 as the day the Patriots pulled off a remarkable victory, but actually began their descent from the championship ranks!
