After the first two weeks of the NFL season, it was not surprising that the Kansas City Chiefs had scored the most points in the AFC West. What was surprising, however, was that the Chiefs had allowed the fewest points in the division, and by a considerable margin. Kansas City gave up just 24 points combined in their first two games, while the other teams in the division allowed 48, 51, and 53 points through their first two contests. Will that trend continue on Monday night, when the Chiefs travel to INVESCO Field in Denver to take on the division-rival (and 51-point-allowing) Broncos? Kansas City fans hope that it does. Known for being able to put points on the board, the Chiefs' flaw always seems to be their ability to stop their opponents from scoring. Last season Kansas City gave up 435 points, or over 100 more than both the Broncos and Chargers. The fact that they scored more points than either of those playoff-bound teams didn't prevent them from struggling to a 7-9 record. This year, the Chiefs opened with a 27-7 win versus the New York Jets, and followed up that effort with a 23-17 victory last Sunday night against the Oakland Raiders. That puts their season mark at a perfect 2-0. The Broncos haven't been as effective this season, dropping a 34-10 decision to the Miami Dolphins in their Week 1 contest before coming back with a 20-17 win over the San Diego Chargers in their second game. That means that the Chiefs can take a two-game lead in the AFC West division by beating the Broncos on the road on Monday night. The Raiders and Chargers both sit below Denver in the AFC West standings after slow starts to the season. Last year, the home side won both games between these teams; Denver picked up a 34-24 win at INVESCO Field, and the Chiefs responded with a 45-17 win at Arrowhead Stadium. Both teams were also against-the-spread winners in those contests, and both games paid off for OVER bettors. In their 10 matchups since 2000 Kansas City and Denver are 5-5 straight-up, with the Broncos holding a 5-4-1 edge against-the-spread. Taking the UNDER hasn't paid off much in that time span - seven of those games were OVER plays, with two UNDER plays and one PUSH. Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil is 4-6 all-time versus the Broncos. Mike Shanahan is 12-12 in 24 career games against the Chiefs. In their history, the Kansas City Chiefs are 50-39 versus the Denver Broncos. On the injury front, the Chiefs will be without DT Ryan Sims on Monday, and likely for the rest of the season too, because of a sprained foot. As well, LB Keyaron Fox has a knee injury which might require surgery. The official Week 3 injury report for the Chiefs: OUT - DT Ryan Sims (foot) DOUBTFUL - LB Keyaron Fox (knee) QUESTIONABLE - TE Jason Dunn (knee), DE Carlos Hall (back), T Willie Roaf (hamstring) PROBABLE - RB Tony Richardson (ankle/knee), LB Rich Scanlon (shoulder) For Denver, only probables reported. The official Week 3 injury report for the Broncos: PROBABLE - RB Mike Anderson (ribs), CB Champ Bailey (shoulder), RB Tatum Bell (ankle), S Sam Brandon (groin), WR Todd Devoe (hamstring), TE Nate Jackson (hamstring), CB Darrent Williams (concussion) Next week the Broncos will visit ALLTEL Stadium to play the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 1:00pm EDT start, while the Chiefs will play host to the Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium at 4:15pm EDT.
