UAW-Ford 500Location: Talladega Superspeedway USACity/Sate: Talladega, AL USADate: October 03, 2005
Some things to know about Talladega in 2003...Matt Kenseth won the Winston Cup driving his Ford. Then in 2004, Kurt Busch won the Nextel Cup also driving a Ford. It should be noted that five of the 10 drivers in the Chase for the Nextel Cup this year drive Fords. Last year the top 6 drivers in the EA Sports 500 were D. Earnhardt Jr, Kevin Harvick, Dale Jarrett, Brendan Gaughan, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart.
Fans will notice few differences at this years Talladega fall race, except for the name of the race. Talladega announced in February the change in the sponsorship from EA Sports to the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Ford Motor Company, making the race the UAW-Ford 500.so the only major difference this year is the name.
During the weekend, Kevin Harvick and Herb Thomas will join 33 other drivers when they are inducted into the Talladega Walk of Fame during the UAW-Ford 500. Talladega Superspeedway is by far the biggest, fastest, most competitive Motorsports facility in the world. Records for both speed and competition have been established at Talladega. so hold on to your seats race fans we are gonna see some big action this weekend.
With 6 races left after Talladega, the drivers to watch in the “Chase for the Cup are Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace and Jimmie Johnson. Rusty gained two spots last week and now sits just seven points behind leader Jimmie Johnson. Mark Martin gained three spots last week and is now only 21 points behind Johnson.
The Chase format definitely lends to the notion that a driver that doesn’t win a race can indeed win the Cup. Can you imagine if one of them did it? Do you think that there may be a big rule change next year to prevent it from ever happening again? Don’t you think that it would be a sad day that the legacy of one of these great drivers could be that they were the only driver to win a championship without winning a race? Dan Marino anybody?
Our Picks:: Play Mark Martin in head to head matchups
