MONDAY'S GAME 8/15/05 Philadelphia Eagles - QB Rotation: Donovan McNabb, Mike McMahon, Koy Detmer, Andy Hall. Pro Bowl RB Brian Westbrook ended his week-long holdout and practiced this week. But All-Pro WR Terrell Owens was sidelined after reinjuring his left groin last week, then being dismissed from camp by Andy Reid until next Wednesday. Tune in for updates. Defense thin: Defensive back Matt Ware (knee), defensive tackle Sam Rayburn (elbow), DE Jamaal Green (foot) did not practice Saturday. Pittsburgh Steelers - QB Rotation: Ben Roethlisberger (1st Q), Tommy Maddox, Charlie Batch, Brian St. Pierre. Cowher said the starters could play as much as a quarter against the Eagles, though it is likely that will not include Bettis. RB Duce Staley underwent surgery last week to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher expects him to miss a month. Friday, QB Tommy Maddox did not participate in the afternoon practice. Maddox, who practiced in the morning, developed a stomach flu and was confined to his dormitory room. Coach Cowher said he expects everybody to be ready for the game Monday except for WR Walter Young, WR Lee Mays and recent knee-surgery recipients Duce Staley and LB Joey Porter. Cowher is eager to see several rookies in game action, including draft picks TE Heath Miller, CB Bryant McFadden and T Trai Essex. WR Antwaan Randle El will start at wide receiver with Cedrick Wilson Bill Cowher was asked about the depth of the offensive line. "It's hard to say at this point," he said. "Chris Kemoeatu has had a good camp, as has Trai Essex. Barrett (Brooks) has a lot of experience. Chukky Okobi has been fine. Jim Jones we felt good about last year, and that's why he's on the roster. There are still some young guys." Defense banged up: Pro Bowl LB Joey Porter (hyperextended knee) and CB Deshea Townsend (Achilles' tendon) were injured in practice. Cowher said Ike Taylor probably will replace Townsend at right cornerback. Porter is out a minimum of four weeks. THURSDAY'S GAME 8/18/05 New Orleans Saints - QB Rotation: Aaron Brooks, Todd Bouman, Kliff Kingsbury, rookie Adrian McPherson. Receivers thin with Az-Zahir Hakim (hamstring), TE Ernie Conwell (groin) and TE end Shad Meier (knee) ailing. HC Jim Haslett called the defense's fourth-quarter performance "horrendous" in Friday's loss. New England Patriots - QB Rotation: Tom Brady, Doug Flutie, Rohan Davey, rookie Matt Cassel. HC Bill Belichick said Doug Flutie will play in the Pats' second preseason game Thursday. Belichick indicated Tom Brady would play as well. Belichick said it was too early to lock down his rotation for Thursday's game, but he hinted Flutie would see significant playing time. Linebackers in transition: It will be easier for the Pats to replace retired LB Ted Johnson than Tedy Bruschi. Both played inside linebacker. Bruschi's replacement at weakside inside linebacker could be free-agent pickup Monte Beisel. But in training camp Beisel is sharing reps with new LB Chad Brown, and outside LB Mike Vrabel is also being tried inside. FRIDAY'S GAMES 8/19/05 Tennessee Titans - QB Rotation: Steve McNair, Billy Volek, rookie Gino Guidugli, Shane Boyd. Competition in the secondary: CB Michael Waddell was the nickelback for the Titans in Friday's game, but his head coach said the second-year pro may be worth more. "I haven't ruled out Michael as a starting corner," Jeff Fisher said. Waddell and rookie safety Vincent Fuller have been competing for the nickel, or third cornerback. Veterans Andre Woolfolk and Tony Beckham have been the starting cornerbacks since the beginning of training camp, but first-round draft pick Pacman Jones is expected to enter the mix if he ever reaches a contract with the Titans. Norm Chow is the new offensive coordinator. Atlanta Falcons - QB Rotation: Michael Vick (1-2 series), Ty Detmer (2 Q+), Matt Schaub (3rd Q+), Bryan Randall. Michael Vick won't see much playing time again. Vick may have already taken the most snaps he will take over the three remaining exhibitions. Minnesota Vikings - QB Rotation: Daunte Culpepper, Brad Johnson, Shaun Hill. Moss-less offense: QB Daunte Culpepper has made it his personal mission to spread the ball throughout the offense. On Friday, Culpepper completed passes to a RB (Bennett), TE (Jermaine Wiggins) and three WRs (Nate Burleson, Marcus Robinson and Travis Taylor). Only Burleson saw multiple throws (two). Center thin with Matt Birk and Kyle Schmidt out. NY Jets - QB Rotation: Chad Pennington, Jay Fiedler, Brooks Bollinger. Chad Pennington, six months removed from major surgery on his throwing shoulder, didn't play last week. Pennington has proclaimed himself ready to play Friday against the Vikings, but Herm Edwards would not commit to that. "We'll see where he's at come Wednesday and determine what we're going to do," the coach said. Pennington is not throwing well in practice, especially on long passes. He has struggled on his deep balls, with three interceptions on five attempts in training camp. Pennington admits he's only 85%, expects to be 100% by opening day, and said he's more concerned at this point with making the right reads. The Jets secondary, once a question mark, is suddenly looking like a team strength with the addition of Ty Law, rookie CB Justin Miller, rookie safeties Kerry Rhodes and Andre Maddox and the emergence of first-year S Oliver Celestin. Law and David Barrett will start at cornerback with Miller as the third cornerback. Second-year pro Derrick Strait replaces Ray Mickens at nickel. Second-year man Eric Coleman, a starter last season, and Celestin are the starters at safety. Celestin can also play some cornerback/nickel back. Ty Law has to work himself into playing shape. Mike Heimerdinger, the former offensive coordinator with the Titans, is the new offensive coordinator. Cincinnati Bengals - QB Rotation: Carson Palmer, Jon Kitna, Casey Bramlet, Craig Krenzel. Linebackers thin: Rookie MLB Odell Thurman had a busy night, playing most of the game as the Bengals continue to be short on linebackers. Washington Redskins - QB Rotation: Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell, rookie Jason Campbell. The Redskins are short on cornerbacks with Walt Harris and Artrell Hawkins out with minor injuries and Carlos Rogers (ankle) ailing. "We're definitely thin at corner," Joe Gibbs said.
