With all due apologies to major league baseball, there is excitement in the air as NFL training camps have kicked off and the college ones begin this week as well.
Most of you will have forgotten that I wrote in this section several months ago that the Baltimore Ravens, will be a handful for NFL teams this season.
The defense will once again be terrorizing opponents as Lewis, Suggs, Rolle, Sanders and McAllister, are bent on making up for a mediocre season. The offense though is ready for a breakout season and with Billick, Fassell and Neuheisal calling the shots watch out!
Jamal Lewis has now paid his debt to society and I would assume has done some big time soul searching while under lock and key. With a healthy Todd Heap back and some strong wideouts in Mason, Clayton and the sleeper Clarence Moore, the Ravens will defeat the Colts on opening weekend in September.
You can either look at the cup being half full or half empty in regards to former Seahawk wide receiver Koren Robinson. He has checked himself into a 28-day alcohol rehabilitation program in South Carolina.
Robinson pleaded guilty July 18 to a charge of driving under the influence, but he faces an additional probation violation charge because he had alcohol on his breath when he reported to serve a one-day jail term a few days later. The Seahawks released Robinson in June after he was charged with drunk driving, the latest in a series of problems.
The receiver missed six games last season, four because of an NFL-mandated suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy and two others as punishment by the team for missing meetings.
Maybe and that is a big maybe, the talented but troubled receiver will see the light in the hospital and come back a better person. Some guys just cannot handle success and actually sabotage their happiness!
Keep an eye on Ashley Lelie in Denver as the guy has finally decided to hit the weight room! The decision to hit the weight room hard coincided with the natural development of Lelie's 25-year- old body.
It yielded significant results, too, even if he never will mold himself into a hulking figure at a lanky 6-foot-3.
An example of the gains he made could be seen in the bench press. Whereas he previously could do a single repetition, or maybe two, lifting 225 pounds, this off-season he was doing three sets of 225 seven or eight times.
"He's worked his (expletive) off," Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer said.
Lelie also gained 5 pounds, bringing his weight to about 205.
"Honestly, this year he's grown up," fellow receiver Rod Smith said. "He just grew up as far as this business and as far as understanding what we expect and what he can get out of himself. And he knows he can get a little more."
Watch out for the Broncos!
